——The Scientific Experiment Center of Yunnan University

tific Experiment Center of Yunnan University was founded in 1980. With the aid of the loan from World Bank, the center has so far equipped with more than 20 large-scale imported instruments with good precision. With its main building of 3000m2 and a subsidiary building of 200m2, along with a big collection of scientific equipments within various research fields, the Center is regarded as the largest modernized scientific laboratory center in Kunming, yunnan Province, P.R. China. Integrating teaching, scientific research, analysis and test, the Center includes 5 analysis & test labs and 2 teaching labs. There are totally 34 employees among whom 3 are professors and 15 are associate professors in the Center, concerning many subjects such as chemistry, physics, biology , information electronics and etc.

The Center had passed the inspection in analysis & test certification held by the National Bureau of Chinese Supervisory of Quality &Technology, and then followed a re-inspection in 1999. The center was appraised and certified in the legal qualification of the analysis & test data within the 15 kinds of application items out of the 5 types of application areas. The Center could make good services to the society in the forms of issuing trade certificates & testimonials, evaluation and inspection of the products quality, supply of the analysis &test data for the scientific achievements and etc.

The Center is both a public service system of the large-scale instruments and an important basement in analysis&test,teaching and R&D, analysis, especially in the cultivation of the high qualified personnel’s. The Center’s policy is a common resource-sharing policy aiming to attract as many people and companies as possible to use the equipments with their maintenance treatments done by the center. Now that the Joint Analysis & Test Center of Colleges and Universities in Yunnan Province, which was found in 1990 had been attached to the center, the center’s large-scale instruments had spread over the colleges and universities all over the province.

During the “Project 211”, the center ordered and then installed a few big equipments such as the 500M NMR spectrometer and etc. Then after the upgrading of the computer systems of some older instruments, the capabilities of the center’s instruments was further improved. The efficiency of the instruments’ running was increased a lot by taking the measures such as the cooperation with any other relevant colleges in the university, in the relevant research area, in the cultivation of MS and PhD, in the establishment of experiments center and also the gradual instruments’ openness to the faculty as well as the MS and PhD students. Following the Chinese’s developing strategy for the western provinces and also the Yunnan Province’s strategy to establish a strong and green economic province, the Center has developed its own characteristic in the analysis and test in the fields of material science, environment science and biology & pharmacy science. The Center’s characteristics was also for  the developments of the university’s key and novel subjects and also the aims of the university’s “211 project”. The Center has established long-term mutual relationships with Sydney University in cooperation with anti-cancer medicine research, and Hopkins University in cooperation with drug-control research. The Center has undertaken many research projects for instances the National Natural Scientific Funds projects, the international cooperative projects, the Yunnan Provincial projects in natural sciences and etc. Up to now, the Center has got great academic achievements, publishing more than 200 papers in the national and international scientific magazines, and also more than 5 textbooks and scientific books. As for the scientific achievements, the Center has won more than 20 prizes and rewards including the provincial scientific progress rewards, the Spark Plan prizes and the invention rewards and etc.

Computer Center

The Computer Center of Yunnan University has enjoyed a history of neary 30 years ever since its foundation. As a public education service branch, the Computer Center is open to the faculty and students and is responsible for the development, utilization and management of computer study resources and processes.

With the increasing demand in teaching and the management of computer information resources, some teachers of the Computer Center were assigned to set up the Network Center and the Public Computer Teaching Department in 1997 and in 1998 respectively. The working function of the Computer Center is part of that of the Modern Education Technology Center. Now it is in the charge of the Educational Administration Department.

The Computer Center has 17 registered staff members, two of whom are with the high titles of a technical post, nine with middle titles and the rest with low titles. Since 1997 computer equipment has been added annually and all the computers are connected to the school net. The Computer Center has three big computer laboratories which have over 100 microcomputers and ten computer multimedia classrooms. Altogether there are 800 over microcomputers, three workstations and servers.

Our Computer Center is accessible to students from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. thrugh the year. We have been trying our best to take full advantages of the computer resources to provide students with maximal access to using computers. Besides, our Computer Center holds state-level computer tests, all kinds of provincial computer tests and computer knowledge & skill contests each year. Meanwhile our Computer Center undertakes the task of offering computer courses, computer teaching reforms and the computer teaching of MBA and the like.

To meet the requirements of quality-oriented education and cultivating talents, we are now committing ourselves to the development of net study resources and the establishment of a modern education technology application web station of our university. We are also exploring a scientific, standard and high efficient management mode of computer classrooms for the sake of supplying students with excellent information resources under net environment. The computer Center has been playing a positive role in the construction of a modern education approach for Yunnan University.

Yunnan University is equipped will all kinds of facilities for both education and research such as the experiment center the computer centerweb administrative centerteaching video center and information center. Among them, the experiment center has been qualified as a calculation unit at the state level. The web administrative center has succeeded in connecting the CERNET with Internet. Our university ranks as the 12th in terms of checking for the relevant persons from thousands of information stations. Thus, it is up to the first-rate standard of the campus web.

The university library has a total area of 18261 square meters with more than 1200,000 books, the unit can connect the whole computer administrative system of the universities in Kunming. The computer interviewcirculation and searching and statistics are partly automatic. In addition, the science hall with a coverage of 15107 square meters and the major experiment lab of industrial microbial ferment project with a coverage of 2500 square meters have put into operation. Yunnan university is also equipped with a FM wireless system. Benefit from this service can be available not only to the teachers and students of Yunnan university but to the ones of other universities and research institutions.

 

The Middle School Attached to Yunnan University

The middle school attached to Yunnan University was founded in 1927. Its predecessor is the middle school attached to Dong Lu University with 74 year history. The middle school is famous historically. It used to nurture a great many talented persons including expertsscholarsprofessorsacademicians of the Chinese Science academy and many statesmen. Some very famous people such as Chu Tu NanYang Chun ZhouZhang Guang Nian Zhao FenQi Huai YuanZhu De Yang Zhuang Yu ZhiDai Yong NianXiong Bin MingZhao Guo ShuLi Guang Tian studied or taught in this school. It was closed for some unknown reason.

Since its re-opening, and above all, with the help of all walks of life and the efforts of all the teachers and students, the educational quality has improved quickly and ranked as the 1st for more than 10 years. It becomes known for its unique featuresschool spiritshigh educational quality. In the past 18 years, the school has expanded as big as 45 times in the number. There was only one junior class of 60 students in 1982. It has witnessed such a development in the school as 44 junior and senior classes of 3000 student. It becomes the biggest middle school with the quickest development in Kunming.

For more than 10 years, the teachers with high qualification have come into its own. Of the 150 teachers, 8 are of a special classification, 30 are of a high classification. With the guidance of the president Professor He Ming, all the teachers take part in the educational research, and they published hundreds of essays, and more than 80 textbooks. Many teachers win 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the teaching competition and essay ones. The students get high scores in the entrance exams for senior schools and for university, and also make high achievement in all kinds of contests.

It keeps the percentage of entering the university as over 90%, and sends many students to Qing Hua UniversityBei Jing UniversityFu Dan Universitythe Chinese People’s University and Yunnan University.

In terms of improving the quality education, the school has also accomplished a great deal with unique features. All kinds of extra-classscientific activities have enriched the campus atmosphere, thus improving the students’ quality. The teachers as well as their students volunteer to compose and record the music tapes such as “ Campus Songs”, and the relevant teaching material books are established as the pioneering works all over the middle school of Yunnan Province. The school has developed exchange activities with the ones in USAJapanAustraliaNew ZealandThailandthe region of Hong Kong. There is also exchange visit between teachers and students. The school also employ foreign teachers, sometimes select students to study in USA for a short term, and accept the foreign students to study. All these are typical of the school’s uniqueness and superiority.

In the 18 years after it re-opening the school has come into its own with a series of achievement in terms of teaching and scientific research.

The school has it own particular feature in its management system. It is directed mainly by Yunnan University and jointly managed by the Institute of Noble Metals and Kunming Branch of the Chinese Science Academy. Thus the school is not funded directly either by the provincial or municipal government. It relies on the students’ tuition on their own. In the past 10 years, the school has saved tens of millions of RMB for the government, and its students have benefited from its good education. As the result of its good teaching quality, and excellent atmosphere, the number of the candidates has increased extremely sharply.

There is a uniqueness in the way of managing. The middle school is funded by non-governmental organizations and personnel and supported by the government at the same time.

The authorities at the level of Yunnan Province, Kunming municipality as well as Yunnan University have confirmed the school’s achievement and supported its development. Therefore, the school has the conditions as well as the capacity to further it development and cooperate with those potential units. Based on this, the school can be developed into a high standard school in correspondence with the status of Yunnan University under the implementation of “ 211 Project ”.


Key Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Fermentative Technology of Yunnan, Yunnan University

Established in 1993,with the approval of Provincial Planning Commission, Provincial Financial Department as well as the Provincial Science and Technology Commission, the Key Laboratory of Industrial Microbiology and Fermentative Technology of Yunnan is an important part of key laboratories of microbiology resources of the Ministry of Education. The laboratory aims at the acceleration of the modernization, industrialization and internalization of biological fermentative industry of China with the help of the rich microbiological resources of Yunnan and the solid scientific research ability of Yunnan University.

There are 17 staff members in the lab, three doctors and 9 masters majoring in microbiology, fermentative technology, chemistry, molecular biology etc. There are 24 imported pieces of equipment such as automobile fermenter(5L, 25L, 50L), electronic balance, NIKONE800universal microscope, infrared spectrumer, infrared ultraviolet , capillary electrometer, cryogenic freeze drying oven, super filtration system , high-speed cryogenic centrifuger , PCR, yel imaging system, and low – temperature refrigerator as well as 50 home-made equipments.

The lab has made great achievements: has published more than 200 papers and 17 books, and has won one prize of national level and eight prizes of provincial level.

1. Research on the culture of microbiology vaccine.

2. Research on secondary metabolite.

3. Free technique of microbiology and new technology of testing

4. The research on microbiological molecular biology

5..Reform the traditional industry with advanced and high technology.

The establishment of the key laboratory shall fulfill the requirements of the Education Department: in the field of scientific research, great achievement shall be reached in carrying out key projects: the basic research as well as applied research shall be promoted harmoniously; the general level of scientific research of the center shall be moved into the lead of China; great academic reputation shall be achieved in the international fields. In the field of the nurture of qualified personnel, masters, doctors and other professionals shall be nurtured and short-term training shall be provided to whole society; in the field of academic exchange and the construction of reference materials and information, national and international academic conferences shall be held, visiting scholars both from home and abroad shall be welcomed, the facilities such as book center and information network; in the field of consulting service, consulting service shall be provided to governments of different levels and all circles, the ability of solving problems and decision analysis shall be improved ; in the field of the reformation of scientific research system, system of appointment and system of international distribution shall be established. In a word, the center shall be an integration of “ produce, study, research” and the model in China.
