Yunnan University’s
Scientific Research Achievements: a Brief Introduction
Ever since its foundation, Yunnan
University
has been committed to “ gaining profound knowledge,
producing specialized talents and disseminating justice and truth.” Apart from
solid academic studies, its faculties and research
fellows have been keen on the combination
of theories and application. Many research programs have been launched with
consideration of the conditions of Yunnan
Province. In mathematics, Dr. Xiong
Qinglai’s treatise On Integral Function and
Infinite Meromorphic Function has been recognized
by the international mathematical circle, and hence the proper term Xiong’s Infinite Series. It was in Yunnan
University
that Dr. Chen Xingshen started his study in Affinity in
Space. Dr. Peng Xingwu
pioneered the research in atomic nuclear theory in physics in 1950’s. In the
1980’s Yunnan University took the lead in the
successful development of the electron
microscope, the dual mode traveling
wave tube for hot plasma, and the first three-meta and- dimensional
computer-processing program for Chinese characters in China.
Quite a number of achievements have been
made in such fields as high energy cosmic ray and astrophysics. What with the
rich natural and ecological resources in Yunnan,
and with close observations of many meteorological phenomena, earthquake and
ozone, a noticeable amount of research has been done in biology and geoscience,
and valuable information has been accumulated.
Recent years have seen the scientific
and technological research work in Yunnan
University
enter into a new phase. 117 projects have been approved to be launched ever
since 1980’s when the National Foundation for Natural Sciences was founded, accounting
for 21% of the total for Yunnan Province. Yunan University has “the
lion’s share” of the grants from the Basuc Applied
Research Foundation in Yunnan Province. And it
ranks 60 in terms of its number of treatises printed in SCI ranks 60th
, reflecting its research level in basic science. According to the 1998
statistics provided by the Information Abstracts Center of Chinese Academy of
Sciences, the average research power of Yunnan
University in fundamental sciences came up to the 83rd place in
China, with mathematics taking the 29th position, chemistry the 37th,
engineering the 71st, geoscience the 76th,
agricultural science the 99th. 1,080 projects were accomplished in Yunnan
University
from 1995 through 1999. The ones
that are of great significance include: 7 projects sponsored by the National
Social Science Foundation, 13 by the Humanities and Social Sciences Foundation
of the Ministry of Education of the State, 5 through the cooperation with other
universities in Yunnan, and 12 other important projects.
Yunnan University, with
relentless efforts, has obtained a great number of important theories and
practical achievements in scientific research. From 1995 to 1999, 2,120 academic
papers and 82 theses have been published, out of which 74 items have won
awards, and 14 items have been marketed.
In high-tech, Yunda(namely, Yunnan
University)High-tech
Corporation, which boasts the largest research center in the world for the
study of rapin and lactone
substances, has been listed in the stock market. Changxiao120(literarily
enduring effect 120), an up-to-date product, has been successfully developed.
After five years’ hard work, Yunda
High-tech has become the first in China that has mastered
the McAB( monoclonal anti-bodies) contraception test
skill. It has joined hands with Jinshili group of Hong
Kong in assembling a production line which will be the largest
and most advanced in China.
A special fund has been granted by the National Committee for the high-tech
promotion program of the development of an environment-friendly
pesticide. An area of
40,000 mu in both northern and southern
China
has been dedicated to the experiment with bio-antiseptics for plants; the annual
output of these products will be about 1,000 metric tons.
