Jiang Hanqiao, a member of Hai nationality, came from Hunan province and was born in January 1928. As a phytoecologist and professor, he is now the head of Ecology & Geobotany Institute of Yunnan University and also acts as a doctoral tutor. Being a graduate from Biology Department of Fudan University in 1953, he was transferred to work in Yunnan University in 1956, and was appointed Vice Dean of Biology Department in 1980 and Vice President of Yunnan University between 1983 and 1991. He has taught Phytoecology and Geobotany and studied the vegetation in Yunnan for a long time. He has also studied systematically the forms, the distribution and the resources management of the tropical and subtropical vegetation and has become an expert in this field. By applying what he learnt from the major international groups of Geobotany to his study, he has made great contribution to the research and exploitation of the vegetation in Yunnan. He was the chief editor of Yunnan Vegetation, in which he advanced the dividing principle of “ the horizontal belts of mountains”, threw light on the differences and connection between the horizontal belt and the vertical belt of plateau vegetation in the mountainous areas, illustrates the reasons for the diversification of vegetation forms in Yunnan and approaches the problem of how to divide tropical and subtropical vegetation belts. Since 1975, he has been the chief editor of seven books (published by Science Press, Forestry Press and Science and Technology Press of Yunnan) and a book on popularization of science (published by Science Press). He was ever engaged in compiling a monograph (published by Science Press) and a textbook for national higher education (published by People’s Education Press). He also published more than 10 articles in the academic journals. He was awarded the first and the second prize of National Scientific & Technological Achievements and the second prize of the Provincial Scientific & Technological Achievements. Adult Education School of Yunnan University, founded in 1960, now boasts a history of more than 40 years. Under the guidance of the Communist Party’s policy, it has made considerable achievements. Its faculty members are extremely pleased with and proud of what they have amounted to in these 40 years.

Ever since it was set up, its leaders have aimed to adapt the adult education to the economic construction and social development of Yunnan Province. Great effort has been made to adjust the specialties, levels and forms of its education. The number of its specialties has increased from 4 including Art & History, Maths & Physics, Chemistry and Biology to 30 such as Art & History, Science & Engineer, Finance & Economics, Politics & Law, Management, Teacher-training and Foreign Languages. As for the levels, it had only the Junior College Education in the past, but now it offers Preparatory Courses, Junior College Education, Undergraduate Courses, Junior College for Second Majors and various kinds of Further Education. Its forms are made up of Correspondence Courses, Night College, Mid-career Studies and other trainings. Therefore, the school, on the basis of Junior College and Undergraduate Education, has established a pattern of various specialties, levels and farms. Furthermore the school’s enrollment has increased from more than 300 to about 7000. More than 20000 students, who graduated from the school, work diligently and contribute to the development of our country and society with their knowledge, ability, ambition and devotion. In 1992, the school was awarded the prize of Yunnan’s Excellent Unit of Adult Education by the Education Department of Yunnan Province. In the national assessment of Adult Higher Education in 1997, it was listed as one of 49 most outstanding schools.

The Adult Education School of Yunnan University has accepted the education quality as its core of work. With the optimized teaching set-up, the scientific teaching methods, the excellent teachers and the strict control, the education quality has been promoted greatly.

The school’s new office building, built in 1998, has provided better equipment to promote the development of the adult education in Yunnan University. At present, the school has its own library, computer rooms, language labs, chemistry labs and multi-media classrooms. The executive offices, equipped with computers, can practice computer-management in the process of recruiting students and administrating teaching, finance and textbooks. Its network of computers are to connected with Internet.

The competition of modern times centers on technology, talents and education. So the life-long education is the ultimate aim of the modern education. As one form of life-long education, the adult education is playing an indispensable role in developing our country and energizing the national spirit.

At the beginning of a new century, the adult education of Yunnan University will be dramatically motivated by the previous as well as the present achievements and ready to bring more glory to the university.

A Brief Introduction of the Key Subject

The project of Mountain Ecology and Biological Resources of Plateau is intended to study Purification ecology, the exploitation and sustainable use of biological resources by employing biological chemical technology. It consists of the following five major specialties: (1) Vegetation and Landscape Ecology; (2) Structural and evolutional Ecology; (3) Extremely Environment and Environmental Ecology; (4) Exploitation and use of biological resources; (5) the development and study of biological active substance. The subject offers 4 majors for undergraduate students and four provincial key subjects including botany, zoology, ecology and microbiology. It has a National Base of Biological Training , an advanced Specimen Room, a Microbiological Mushroom Storehouse, various labs, Base of Practice Teaching, Institute of Ecology & Geobotany, Yunnan Information Center of Animal Protection, Yunnan Microbiological Institute, Yunnan Key Lab of Industrial Microbial Ferment and Ecological & Biological Resources Lab. In August 2000, Microbial Resources Lab was listed as one of the Educational Department’s key labs. The subject is included in IPPB of UNEP and becomes a UNESCO teaching base for ecological technology. It has 163 teachers and research workers, of which 49 are professors (with an average age of 48.5) and 60 are associated professors.
