I. Introduction

Teachers are critical to talent cultivation and scientific research as well as to “211 Project” building and the development of Yunnan University (YNU). In the past few years, YUN has been adhering to the principle of promoting discipline construction and strengthening the work on the teaching team.

Our tenet is to select talented intellectuals by giving them chances to have a full play of their knowledge and the advantageous conditions in their career, and to retain them with our sincerity. In recent years, the university has made great effort to bring in talent to be posted in different teaching and scientific research positions for the purpose of establishing key disciplines, majors, and master and doctoral programs. So far, YNU has recruited 17 teachers and scientific researchers with Ph.D. degrees and 10 returned scholars and scientist from abroad (with at least 2 years’ overseas study). It has now set up a “specially-appointed professorship” post for the “Changjiang Scholar Plan”. In addition, she has actively participated in the effort made by the provincial government to seek for talents in the United States and has signed 56 intentional agreements. Besides, YNU has assisted the Overseas Chinese Affair Office of the State Council in receiving hundreds of doctors who returned to China to conduct investigation and has established cooperative relationship with over 10 overseas scientists.

Since 1996, YNU has regulated its effort in strengthening the reservoir of young and middl-aged talents. So far, 4.6 million yuan have been invested successively on teachers’ training, including sending over 70 teachers to study for a doctorate , over 200 members of the staff for various professional training and about 100 members of the staff to attend foreign language training classes. In addition, YNU has continually fostered and brought in leading figures in academic fields. In the past few years, 38 members of the staff have been selected as leading academic figures of the new century at provincial level.

Among the existing team of teaching staff of Yunnan University, there are 185 Ph.Ds (doctorate candidates included), 683 teachers with doctor or master degrees, and 289 teachers promoted to professorship on the basis of their performance. The cultivation of the teachers at different levels has been yielding notable results in Yunnan University. There are 5 experts with the honor of outstanding contribution at national level, 18 experts with honor of outstanding contribution at provincial level, and 39 winners of special government allowance. 13 doctorate programs, 2 post-doctoral exchange stations, and 1 post-doctoral enterprise workstation have been set up in Yunnan University.

At present, Yunnan University has about 3340 teachers, 2432 of whom are at work, and the other 908 are retired. 1981 members of the faculty have professional or technical titles (including 1040 full-time teachers). The ratio of teachers to students is 1 to11. The young and middle-aged teachers (under the age of 45) with postgraduate credentials account for 74% of the faculty. The teachers graduated from other universities account for 40% of the faculty. Yunnan University now has 258 teachers with full professorship and 582 with associate professorship. The teachers with full professorship are at an average age of 46.8. An echelon of teachers with higher academic credentials, younger in average age and more rational structure is in its shape.

VII. Senior Staff Recruitment

“Specially-appointed Professor” in Ecology Program

On the approval of the specialist judging panel of “ Plan of Changjiang Scholar Award”, Ecology program in Yunnan University is entitled to the “Specially-appointed professorship”. Experts home and abroad are welcome to Yunnan University.

Qualifications

1. aged under 45, and with Doctor’s degree;

2. competent in teaching specialsim courses;

3. with great academic achievements, and demonstrable qualities of academic leadership to ensure the leading position of the program;

4. with comprehensive research experience, evident in publications, and competent to have some breakthrough in the frontier theories of ecology.

Job description:

Applicants will be expected to conduct research on botanical ecology, including vegetation & landscape ecology, evolution ecology, pollution & recovery ecology, etc..

Benefits:

The program is entitled to grant doctor’s degree, equipped with a post-doctor research center and an open lab of the Education Ministry. Plenty of relevant materials and equipment are available, including 3S (RS, GIS, GRSI), and facilities for the research on cell, molecular ecology, ecological genetics and chemical ecology. The university will provide the following: offices for research, no less than RMB 1,000,000 for research, academic team, assistants, an apartment of no less than 120 square meters, RMB 50,000 for settlement. Besides the salary, RMB 100,000 will be granted per year as a specially appointed professor.
