The Institute of Microbiology of Yunnan Province was built with the approval of the National Scientifical Commision in 1979 and it was incorporated into Yunnan University in 1997.At present it has 46 scientifical and technological personnel including 21 advanced personnel ,five professors and 12 visiting professors.

     Ever since Yunnan University¡¯s foundation, people in this university have been pursuing the objectives of "gaining profound knowledge, producing specialized talents and disseminating justice and truth."Apart from very solid academic studies, faculties and research staff have all been keen on the conbination of thearies with practice.

    For cultivating high-level talents in fundamental sciences, a batch of state-level bases for fundamental science research and teaching were founded. Yunnan University¡¯s speciality of biology is among the third batch of the state-level bases in construction in November, 1994. Towards the end of 1997, Yunnan University instituted the school of life science and chemistry, following whose establishment the leadership.

According to the latest notice from Yunnan Provincial Department of Education, a newly-established Yunnan Province Government Scholarship For Students from GMS Countries is now open to all qualified applicants. Aiming at strengthening cooperative ties with neighboring counties and contributing to the training of professionals in China ¨C ASEAN Free Trade Region, this is a fully supported scholarship granted to students from GMS countries in pursuit of diploma and non-diploma education (including Ph.D., Master's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, Chinese Language study and non-diploma researches) in Yunnan Province . The first group of 60 scholarship recipients will start their study in Yunnan in September 2004.

Since the end of the Cold War, rapid economic development of China and India, the two Asian powers, has drawn great attention to the world, which has generated £¬ and will continue to generate profound impacts upon the Asian geo-political and geo-economic landscape. Scholars attach importance to attitudes and policies of the U.S. and other powers towards emerging China and India while deeply studying all aspects of these two countries. The emergence of China and India and its implications for U.S.-Asia relations have also become the main research topics of the influential research institutions in the United States . Against such a background, Yunnan University established Center for South Asian & Indian Studies and China-India-U.S. Forum in 2005.
The forum is committed to cooperative research and mutual exchange with research institutions and universities in India £¬ the United States £¬ and other countries £¬ accelerating mutual understanding £¬ broadening consensus £¬ strengthening cooperation in all the fields among the three countries.
The forum undertakes research projects in cooperation with domestic and foreign partners, hold academic conferences, publish research reports £¬ and develop academic debates over the current issues on the website.
